Lip formulas are oil-based, and powder here is a structural material rather than a filler: it sets how firm the bullet stands, whether application drags the lips, whether the stick sweats in summer and whether colour transfers to the cup. KingPowder boron nitride, spherical silica and oil-based slurries are compatibility-tuned for oil systems, balancing bullet stability against on-lip comfort.

Four formulation problems in this category

Sweating and oil bleed at high temperature

Insufficient structural strength lets oil beads form on the surface in transit or summer storage, damaging shelf image.

Drag and grittiness on application

Poor dispersion or coarse particles create friction and a sandy feel on the lips.

Dryness and emphasised lip lines

An unbalanced oil-absorbing powder load pulls moisture and oil away from the lips themselves.

Transfer and short wear

Incomplete film formation leaves powder and pigment unfixed, so colour moves on contact.

Formulation notes

Lip makeup includes lipsticks, lip glazes, lip muds, lip glosses and other categories. Most formulations are based on oil-phase systems, which have strict requirements for powder compatibility, thixotropy and separation control. Liankai’s powders, including boron nitride, spherical silica and organic pigments, are widely used in the development of various lip formulations.

Powders in lip products are mainly used to regulate formula viscosity, improve application texture, control drying and film-forming speed, and enhance wear performance. In solid lipsticks, functional powders can improve the structural stability of the formula and suppress common industry issues such as sweating, oil separation and oil blooming under high-temperature conditions. In lip mud and lip glaze systems, powders can regulate the thixotropy of the formula, provide a smooth application without tugging on the lips, and help prevent transfer and color fading after film formation.

Lip formulations can easily encounter issues such as uneven powder dispersion, a heavy or gritty feel, dryness, and oil separation or deformation of the formula. Surface-modified powders offer excellent compatibility with oil-based systems and are easy to disperse, without forming particles or agglomerates during processing. They can not only help organic pigments enhance color saturation, but also optimize the application feel, while balancing manufacturing process requirements with the end-consumer experience.

Frequently asked questions

My lipstick sweats and shows oil on the surface in summer. Can powder selection fix it?

The goal is higher structural strength and oil retention. Boron nitride plates form a supporting network in the oil phase, and spherical silica tunes thixotropy; together they usually suppress sweating and oil bleed noticeably. Dosage must be trialled against your wax base.

Is grittiness in lip mud caused by coarse powder?

Not necessarily. It is more often incomplete dispersion, or untreated powder with poor oil compatibility forming agglomerates. Switching to an oil-based slurry for pre-dispersion, or selecting a surface-treated grade, is usually more effective than simply reducing particle size.

What does powder do for transfer-resistant wear?

Powder does the fixing: spherical silica supports film formation and absorbs excess oil so pigment stays on the lips instead of moving to the cup. Wear and comfort trade off against each other, so the balance follows the product positioning.
